As a teacher and parent on my feet for hours at a time, I can’t afford to be sidelined by chronic back pain. Prior to hurting my back many years ago, I had always been fit. I cycled, skied, swam, did yoga — I was the poster child for an active lifestyle. During that time, I’d be plagued by occasional back flare-ups. If I made one wrong movement, that was it – no more yoga, cycling, or skiing. I’d still be able to swim once in awhile, if I was lucky. But I’d go from living life in warp speed to learning to cope with chronic pain.
Plus, to add insult to injury, getting less exercise meant my weight slowly started to creep back up. And let’s face it: going to fitness classes at the gym is tough when you’re in pain. I felt extremely self-conscious when I couldn’t keep up. Then I read about Nuspine from a Facebook ad. What drew me to the program was that I could watch the daily video modules in the privacy of my home. I could even take it with me when I traveled. Plus, the program only took 20 to 30 minutes to complete each day. I loved that I could put food in the oven, literally “get fit” in half an hour, and still have dinner on the table.
When I first started the Nuspine video modules, I was frankly worried it was going to be too easy. At the back of my mind was the nagging thought that I wasn’t doing enough to help my back. But the important thing was that I trusted Nuspine – where I often didn’t trust myself – to deliver the program in safe increments. The five video modules progressed from fairly easy exercises to harder routines that really challenged me. They focused on building core strength through planks, yoga poses, and other moves. One of my favorite modules was the one based on balance – so important to maintain as you get older.
As I moved through the program, I definitely built up my endurance and strength. Eventually, I could incorporate what I learned in the videos into my workouts at the gym — and not worry about making my back pain worse. In fact, when I went back to some of my former activities, my pain level was so much lower than before. I was able to truly enjoy my workouts again, and I had a brand-new appreciation for what my body could do. I was so pleased with the program, I’ve shared it with some friends online.
Becoming practically pain-free was a huge milestone. Now I feel like I have a fighting chance to get back in the shape I want – and even more important, to get through my day-to-day activities without feeling pain. The other day, I did a 20-km. bike ride up and down some pretty serious hills. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do that before Nuspine! Next on my list, believe it or not, is a season ski pass. It’s been awhile since I’ve skied, but with the help of Nuspine, this just might be the year!
